Why it’s important to report changes to the STEP Unit

Changes in income (increase/decrease; loss of job, start of job)

FoodShare

If their income increases, the FoodShare amount goes down and if not reported timely could result in an overpayment which the customer will be required to pay back. If the income reported decreases, they may be entitled to more food share.

Medicaid

If their income decreases, their premium or cost share could decrease. If income increases, there may be an increase in premium/cost share or they may be over income limits and not eligible for Medicaid programs.

Changes in shelter cost and med/remedials

FoodShare

May impact the amount of FS a person is eligible to receive. If shelter costs goes up, the FS will increase; if it goes down, the FS benefit goes down.

Medicaid

May impact the amount of Waiver cost share a person pays. If the shelter costs goes up, cost share may go down. If it decreases, the premium/cost share goes up.

Absence from the home

FoodShare

If they are not in the home, they are not eligible to receive FoodShare. If it’s not timely reported, could result in an overpayment.

Medicaid

If they are out of the home and in an hospital and/or Nursing home, the medical code needs to be changed so expenses are covered.
